(HS Comp) Week 12i: Before the Competition!

Student Name: Jerico M.

Objective: Our last objectives for this group project was to finalize the designs of our robot and maximize our efforts to ensure that our robot is at its prime.

Procedure: The stress was on us for this final week since we also had other assignments and projects for other modules but we were still able to finalize everything. One day before the race we made two big decisions to ensure that we can get the best out of our robot. One was changing the front ramp with something a little more sturdy and two were the wheels.

First up we removed the front ramp and just cut off the flat metal part of a cheese slicer as shown below and covered in white type for defensive purposes against other robots with sensors that are quite high. Afterwards we replaced our wheels with even better ones, we were able to get our hands on these silicon wheels, it had better grip than our rubber wheels and it was a lot more balanced compared to the rubber ones since we’ve made so many alterations to it.

First thing we did was simply cut off the flat metal part of a cheese slicer exactly as shown below. We then covered it in white tape just like before as a defensive strategy to deter robots with high sensor placements.

We were then able to obtain these wheels as a gift from one of the other groups in our class since they did not need it. It was perfect for our robot since our theme was black and white. With these final adjustments out of the way, it was just a matter of testing our robot until Wednesday, we just made spare battery packs incase of emergencies.

Since we to stayed back after our lectures on Tuesday in order to make the changes I mentioned above, the only thing left now was to wait for the competition itself. We just kept testing and testing the robot to make sure that it was perfect and it ran perfectly. The only thing was we had to tape down our wires since every now and then our wires kept popping out when colliding with an object.

From this picture you can easily see the changes we’ve made with the wheels and the ramp compared to the picture from last weeks blog. The wheels are different and the ramp in the front is perfectly elevated to our liking. It also looks a lot sturdier and less bendy like the last one. With all of this done and multiple tests have been carried out, we were pumped and ready!
